Are you a night owl? Or are you an early bird??

If there’s one thing that every one of us ‘hates’ in common, I bet, it is the ‘morning alarm’.And how many of you hit the snooze button, many times?

Well, I must admit. I was one of them. For me, hitting the snooze button, was sort of ‘morning ritual’.I would do it a few times, involuntarily, then wake up miserably at the last minute. And then, it would be a mad rush, preparing breakfast, lunchbox, getting ready, etc, etc.

Every night before going to bed, I would remind myself, “OK, things are going to change tomorrow.I’ll be up early in the morning, and at least would have my morning tea peacefully.”And again, that’ tomorrow never comes.

This was going on for some time until I realized, I need to get over it. I read about the overwhelming testimonials of people who were mentioning that waking up early is the best habit that you could ever learn.

I thought I would go through a ‘trial period’.If I succeed in getting rid of the ‘hit the snooze button’ habit at least, I would be very happy to reward myself.

So slowly, but steadily, I got into the groove to inculcate this incredible habit. Believe me, it wasn’t easy at all. Until I resolved not to touch my phone to snooze it. After a few days, I got over the first hurdle, of snoozing the alarm.

Once ,I got rid of it, waking early became easier and easier.Now,I must say, it’s just become a habit.

Now let’s see, what benefit this simple habit of waking early brings with it.

1. Amazing start of the day :

When you wake up early, you get to see one of the beautiful natural phenomenon-the ‘the sunrise’.What else do you need to have an amazing start of the day than seeing the brilliant colors of the sun blending into the sky?

I enjoy doing my yoga during this time. A wonderful experience where you could just connect with nature. The solemn chirping of the birds and the gentle breeze brings a sense of quietude within. The tranquility that you experience is indescribable.

2. Get a head start :

Yes, when you wake up early, you feel you are ahead of the world. This feel-good factor creates a sense of happiness in you.

The psychological feeling of getting a ‘head start’ in fact has far-reaching effects on one’s accomplishments. It boosts your self-confidence.

On a lighter note,’ all the millionaires’ are early risers…Any connection there??

3. Increases productivity :

This is in fact related to #2. When you get a head start, certainly you feel motivated to continue the lead. As the saying goes ‘Well begun is half done”.

You would definitely notice that productivity increases when you start your day with a positive frame of mind.

Mornings are in fact, the most productive time of the day because it brings with it a freshness that wanes as the day progresses.

4. Have a hearty breakfast :

Oftentimes, the morning rush makes most of us, have a hurried breakfast. Having a hearty breakfast is very important to charge up your body and brain.

When you wake up early, you have enough time to enjoy your breakfast.

5. Time for thought :

There’s no better time than an early morning to review your plans, set goals, express gratitude, prioritize your action plans, etc.

Also, your time-management improves a lot when you wake up early.

How to wake up early?

1. Make a gradual transition :

Start by waking up 15 minutes earlier than usual. Practice this for a few days. Once you get accustomed to this, start cutting back another 15 minutes.

2. Early to bed and early to rise :

This goes hand in hand. When you hit the bed early, naturally your quality of sleep improves and you wouldn’t find it difficult to wake up early.

As per the National Sleep Foundation (NSF) guidelines, a healthy adult needs 7-9 hours of sleep. Listen to your body and understand if it feels rested. Plan your sleep schedule accordingly.

3. Practice a relaxing bedtime ritual :

This includes shutting off from all screen activities at least 30 minutes before sleep. The artificial light of the mobile/laptop screen disrupts your sleep pattern by confusing your body clock.

Instead, read a book(the best thing to do), meditate, write a positivity journal, or just spend time with your family before sleep time

4. Set the alarm and place it away from your bedside table:

Set your alarm to your favorite music.

Believe me, listening to your favorite music, makes you half awake, as soon as the alarm rings.

The second point here is important.Place the alarm away from you.

I got rid of my snooze button habit by placing the alarm away from my bedside table. If the alarm is away from your bed, you have to get up and then snooze it.

By then you are up.Just resolve to stay UP.

5. Imprint your subconscious mind with the time you wish to wake up :

Now,this may sound absurd.

But ,no. It works !

If you recite and affirm your sub-conscious mind about the time that you wish to wake up, rest assured, it would wake you up at that time. It works for me!

Our subconscious mind works in mysterious ways.

To sum it up, waking up early definitely has more benefits than you can count. Other than the healthy or spiritual aspects, it is one life-changing habit that everyone should cultivate to have a productive day and a positive feeling altogether.
